St Barbara maintains an excellent relationship, built over many years, with the local community.

St Barbara provides support to local community events, through in-kind support and donations. This continues to maintain the good relationship St Barbara has with the Shire of Leonora, Aboriginal groups, Leonora District High School, hospital, pastoral lease holders, local businesses and various clubs. Sponsorship within the Leonora region includes:

  • The Indigenous Hip Hop Project at the Leonora District High School, which promotes relevant campaign messages through emceeing, song lyrics and structured dance
  • The Shooting Stars program, an initiative of Netball WA and Glass Jar Australia which uses netball as a vehicle to encourage greater engagement and attendance at school of young Aboriginal girls living in remote WA
  • Goldfields Girl, which brings about positive change and empowerment of young Aboriginal women in the Goldfields
  • The Leonora Golden Gift race, Australia’s richest mile running race along the dusty main street of Leonora
  • The Leonora Cup
  • The Kambalda Football Club, an amalgamation of the Leonora and Kambalda teams

Formal access and Heritage Protection Agreements exist with the Aboriginal groups in the Leonora and the eastern Kalgoorlie region. As part of maintaining the relationships with the Aboriginal stakeholders, St Barbara conducts six monthly meetings with the Aboriginal Community Liaison Committee at Leonora to communicate developments on the Company’s projects.

At Simberi Operations in Papua New Guinea, significant contributions have been made to the local people of Simberi Island, New Ireland province and, more broadly to PNG.  In addition to employing over 500 local people, and creating business opportunities for local businesses and suppliers, St Barbara has paid more than A$19 million (~K40 million) in royalties since the start of production in 2012.  This has allowed for the funding of medical facilities, improved education, transport, communication, infrastructure and community services.
