Simberi is the northern most island in the Tabar group of islands in the province of New Ireland – the eastern most province of Papua New Guinea, approximately 900km Port Moresby. Most of the island’s coast is steep (up to 300 meters in elevation) and surrounded by a fringing reef and deep plunging seawalls given the island’s volcanic origins.
The Tabar Group of Island has a population of about 11,000 islander locals, who speak a common language, Mandara, and share the same cultural ties and beliefs across the island chain. Many speak English and Pidgin. The Tabar Island clans are traditionally matrilineal.
Our Atlantic Operations consists of our open pit Touquoy mine, along with three additional planned projects nearby at Beaver Dam, Fifteen Mile Stream and Cochrane Hill, located approximately 80km from Halifax. We also have an office located in Halifax and we are opening a community office in Musquodoboit in the Q1 2023.
